350.org climate movement launch Tahawul workshop to discuss solutions for the future of energy in Egypt

PRESS RELEASE — For immediate release

350.org climate movement launch Tahawul* workshop to discuss solutions for the future of energy in Egypt.

Hurghada, Egypt – March 5, 2014 — Tomorrow will be the launch of Tahawul workshop in Egypt, which will include 60 young men and women from all over the country converging during the period from March 6 to 9, 2014. The aim of the workshop is for capacity-building to provide them with the skills to organize within their communities in order to work on issues related to climate justice. The workshop will give particular focus to the problem of using coal as a source of energy.

This comes after the Egyptian government has decided to import coal in spite of its harms to the health of individuals as well as the threats posed to the environment and its role in exacerbating global warming and climate change.

350.org, the organizer of the workshop, is one of the members of the Egyptian anti-coal campaign, which works to secure environmental and climate justice.

This workshop comes as a second stage following the initial Global Power Shift workshop held in Turkey last June, which involved 350.org (Egypt) alongside other 350.org movements from around the world.

The first phase of the Global Power Shift, which took place in Istanbul, brought together 500 climate activists from all over the world. Now begins the second phase of the project with the aim to strengthen local climate movements.

The workshop, being held in Hurghada, will include young people between the ages of 18-30 years from different governorates of Egypt. The participants will choose to partake in one of three groups: one group will focus on research and policy work, another will work on media-relations, and a third group will work on direct action using arts as a tool for campaigning.

Afterwards, the aim is to create spaces for dialogue and planning activities throughout Egypt’s governorates using the skill-set acquired in this Power Shift with the aim to combat the import of coal and work towards finding solutions for clean energy in Egypt.

Illegal imports of coal have already entered Egypt for use by cement companies. These are a flagrant violation of existing laws causing serious health hazards to Egyptians while leading to a sharp increase in emissions which cause global warming.

Tahawul workshop is supported by a number of organizations and research centers, which include the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), the Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF), the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), and The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA).
